100+mph

hi,

when taking the car above 100+mph on the freeway (gradually from highway speed of 60mph), then bringing back down by letting off gas back to highway speeds and maintaining that cruising speed (60-70mph), is it normal to smell a slight burning/heating smell in the car? has anyone else experienced this? it goes away after 5-10 min, but i was wondering if this was common as the engine is right behind us. thanks.

Not Common at all, I frequently do what you described and no such smell arise.

mine is about a month old and I still smell things burning off after a spirited drive.

mbodo - that's kind of a relief to hear. so is it only when you get near/over the triple digits? and it goes away fairly quickly for you too? what is that burning smell?

sometimes its rubber (a REALLY spirited drive), most times its a faint smell of oil (per manual, oil consumption is higher than normal during first few miles), other times its a plasticy smell from some protective coating burning the rest of the way off.

Most new cars have this weird burning smell for the first few miles, at least the three I've had in the past two years have.

Again, mine is literally a month old, an '05 987 S. Don't even have plates. If yours is much "older" and you're still having burning smells, you might want to bring it in.

i see. yeah i have an '02 S with less than 25k. but it does smell like what you are describing. i'll bring it in and have them check.

if anyone else has experienced this or has some info that would be great.

My 987S is four months old and I have 6000 kms on it ( 3600 miles). I had all sorts of burning smells for the first few months. Now after a hard run I get hot brake pad smells esp after Auto-X. The Porsche mechanics told me not to worry.

heddok - thanks. did the mechanic mention if that will go away or if that is something that will always happen (the burning smell) after high speed runs?

Check all your fluids - coolant, engine oil, tranny etc. Check your tire pressure too. The panel behind the seats should provide a tight seal to the engine. Check that too.

djantlive - coolant and engine oil is good. same with tire pressure.

there's a tranny fluid? or did you just mean tranny in general?

didn't know about the panel, i'll look into that.

I've smelled tires after agressive/high speed driving.

I've smelled clutch after extensive stop and go driving.

You can tell if it's the tires because if you pull over and put your nose to the tire it smells like what you're smelling while driving.

common problem is a rear main seal leak? your best bet is to bring it in
