My 1998 Boxster with 70,000 miles started to giving me problems this year. It has been a very good and reliable until now and suddenly the following problems started within last few months:

1. The Clam Shell wont open - fixed the drive cable per Toolpants advice.

2. Horn started to acting up by beeping with heavy braking - in process of replacing the horn plate with toolpants help.

3. CD changer quit working - replaced with new changer, but still doesn't work. Toolpants going to help me troubleshoot by swapping the radio unit.

4. The "Double Beeps" when locking with the remote control - I am still working on this problems.

5. Air Conditioning Blower motor has been making little noise and it has stopped couple of time recently. I have feeling that it will give up soon.

6. Driver side sun visor mirror won't stay up - things to fix.

7. The Cup Holders broke few times already - continue fixing and breaking!

How about your Boxster ? Am I the only one having these problems this year ?

Sorry to hear you're having so many problems. On the bright side, none of the problems you're having are disabling the car. Problems like that are the worst.

I have a 1999 Boxster with 70k miles. I haven't had any major problems, although the high horn in my car occasionally stops working for a day then comes back. It's probably a loose connection.

Regarding your "double beeps", does it happen when you lock the door with the key? If not, then perhaps your remote is sending an intermittent signal.

The sun visor is cheap and easy to replace. It's one of the few parts that you don't get reamed on the price.

What is happening to the cup holders? I've heard of problems due to hitting them on the way in or out of the car.

you're not alone...my '98 is having some issues...replacing the climate control head unit...DIY and save about 50%...it's easy...my visors "failed" too...$13 to get a new one at sunsetimports.com...airbag warning came on (the dreaded buckle!) so that might have to be fixed too...dealer reset the light so we'll see if it comes back...otherwise i'm gonna do it myself...parts are $100 a seat and the dealer wants $400+...you gotta expect some of this

Even with all these recent problems, I am still very happy with my/our Boxster compared with the other cars in the past. I remember fixing something almost every weekend when I owned the 1970 Datsun 2000 Roadster.

As Stefan noted, I am still lucky that these are not major engine related problems. Most of them are little things and some of them are the one we could have cause it to break. Especially the Cup-Holders, we just keep hitting or handling little too hard for the way it was designed. Also, the "Short Beep Sound" when it goes into the Locking mode, could be caused by me when I was working on trying to fix the CD changer problem. I did go In & Out of the driver side of the car many times and I did Open & Closed the front hood that could have caused to misalign the latching mechanism or broke the micro-switches.

Little comfort feeling to know that some of you (Brekas) having similar problems on his '98 Boxster.

3. This is usually a head unit so Toolpants is on the right path.

4. Double beeps usually related to convertible top, single beep usually is something that is still open or the micro switch for that protection is faulty when you try to arm the system...center console door, rear or front deck lid, radio contact, etc., etc.

5, 6 and 7. All common problems.

Hope this helps.

3. I've got a good working CDR220 that I have out of my car that I can bring to the next work on cars day to isolate if it is the head unit itself.

4. I'd check the center console between the seats. Frequently I open it to get something out but don't close it all the way to where it clicks and get that.

6. When you take apart the mirror, you will find that the small metal "U" shaped clips popped out. I epoxed them back into place and it has been fine for a while now. I went ahead on the other mirror and did the same thing.

3. Taka came over to my office and my working cd changer was put in his car and his non working cd changer was put in my car. We both have the CDR-210 radios.

My changer worked in his car, but his changer did not work in my car.

Then we swapped magazines with the same result.

His changer must be bad. I think he has sent it in for service.

Sorry to hear you are having so many minor issues that together are large. My 1997 daily driver has 136K miles I've had some minor issues arrise from time to time, but thanks to this BB I've been able to take care of them and keep on driving. I'd like to bring to your attention that a double beep when locking your car with key or remote is telling you the car is NOT locked - one of the sensors, top, window, door is not making a complete circuit and there fore the lock will engage and quickly disengage (double beep). It's not something you should just let go unless you never leave your car unattended...... just my experience :(

for the cupholder problem, I've been using a pair of "ultimate cupholders" ( www.ultimatecupholders.com ) since a tragic coffee spill left me with 2 hours of detail work, I don't even use the stock ones anymore, to the point that I'm going to get a gt3 console delete and pull them out completely

I like my Ultimate Cupholders, but the fit is not as good as the Ultimate Cupholders for my wife's BMW. The metal bends and they fit a bit loose. Do you have a photo showing your install?
