2001 996 won't start

Hello, it's been awhile!

2001 C2 cab, 56K miles (but driven at least weekly)

 

One day last week, I started the car to pull it forward in the garage a few feet.

About an hour later I went to start the car ... and it would not start

Battery, starter are strong. Engine cranks but won't catch.

No smell of fuel, so I'm suspecting the fuel pump has gone bad.  Fuel filter was replaced in the last 10K miles.

I'd like other opinions...

 

On a related topic, I hooked up my generic OBD2 scan tool (OBDLink SX from scantool.net) and no codes were reported.

Is there a more sophisticated scanner that would pick up additional codes from this 2001 996 ?

Common cause for "it cranks but no start" is the CPS, crank position sensor.  Does your tach needle bounce when you try to start?  Also, check fuses/relays for the fuel pump.

Thanks for ideas... update:

 

Tach does not bounce when attempting to start up.  Cranks strong but doesn't catch. 

I checked the fuel pump 25A fuse at position C4...  it is intact.

 

I welcome more ideas of what I should look at next? Checking the fuse was a good idea because there's been no noticeable poor running prior to the sudden "it won't start".

 

Doubt it matters, but for completeness this is a USA car (SF Bay area) and a tip trans.

You have all the signs of a bad crank position sensor; not expensive and relatively easy (one bolt) swap out.

Ok, so I took a closer look at the tach while attempting to start the engine and it does move a little. Just a little.
