I was changing the oil on my 1999 996 Carerra. I unscrewed the oil filter case, then pulled the oil filter down. When the oil filter came down, I looked at the top of it and noticed the part (I don’t know the name of it) it fits onto came off with the oil filter. I had changed the oil several times and this never happened before. I don’t know how that part is supposed to go back on. I tried pressing it back on and it broke. The oil filter case would not screw back on all the way when I stuck the part in the top of the filter like it was when I pulled the filter down. 

 

After it broke, I just put the oil filter and case back on. Now my oil pressure is at 5 anytime I give it gas. I was told the part prevents oil from back flowing into the engine. I can’t fine anything about it on the net or on YouTube. 

 

Can anyone identify this part? And how is it supposed to go back on so the oil filter case will screw all the way on?

 

Any help is greatly appreciated.

This is the oil by-pass valve and should be on the bottom of the canister, since you quote that a breakage has occurred, the entire unit must be replaced.

Go to a Porsche dealer and buy a new filter canister and filter.  They are selling them for less than $30 now.  Do not run your engine with the bypass valve, which belongs in the bottom of the filter canister, removed.  The oil filter will not function properly and will float in the filter canister allowing unfiltered oil to circulate through your engine.

Since you are going to make a purchase, you may wish to consider the LN Engineering oil filter adapter. It provides full flow and utilizes a traditional spin-on oil filter. I convert several years ago and have been very pleased.

I'd second the spin on adaptor route.  It eliminates the bypass, ensuring that 100% of oil is filtered.

Thanks for the info. I wish I would have seen the suggestions about the oil filter adapter before I changed the oil. Maybe next time. It was something I considered when looking for a new filter and canister.

Just drain the oil and re-filter (fine mesh paint filter works great - go to your nearest paint seller and get a few) before putting back in your motor - No need to throw away perfectly good oil.😉

You will lose less than a quart swapping over to a spin on.
