I had the coolant pump  replaced in my 996 4s last week and driving home today the engine started making noise, i lost engine power, the warning battery/generator light came on and also lost power steering. Any ideas

Check your serpentine belt and pulleys.

Agreed. Check the belt. I had always made a point of changing belt if any engine work done. Likely overkill but...

This sounds like belt slipped.  Maybe due to wear at a “tooth?”

Thanks guys, checked the serpentine belt & it’s definitely slipped. The garage replaced it last week also. When I picked up the car & drove home the coolant level warning came on & they sent someone & filled it with 4 litres. Is it possible they forgot to place the belt on properly too?

Oh yes.  We all have stories of bolts that were not properly torqued and other horror stories from service work poorly performed. I was fortunate to have a very good Inde shop in town.

Mechanic came by today & we discovered that the bracket in front of water pump (he replaced) was wedged against pump. He suggested I must have hit something but I pointed out there’s not a single scratch dent etc on the under carriage and the frame is bent on the top side touching the pump pulley. Having it towed back
