I picked up a 99 Boxster from a friend who doesn't have the time to work on this so I sort of took this on. I was thinking of putting back another 2.5L but seems like it would be a waste from reading up on things. Im looking for the best easiest solution to get this up and running and not looking to spend a fortune on it either. Is there any directions on routes of engine? Are the Boxster S be a better solution then the 911 engines? Could I just swap some of the parts over to make it easier for the engine to work? Any insight would be great just want to see what I got myself into with this.

Thanks in advance

I think the very first thing you need to familiarize yourself with is which engines and years will work in the car with the least grief.  Different models and years had different fuel systems, different DME’s, some used CAN Bus communications, which your car does not have, different VarioCam systems, etc. etc.  While a lot of engines will bolt in, the electronic and fuel system differences will turn the project into Frankenstein in a heart beat.   Do your homework before buying anything.

I believe 99 was the last cable drive throttle body. Ive looked but would like to get more insight from anyone on here who has done it or know of it?

Is there any differences in the short block between the automatic and manual engines?

An automatic engine will not have a pilot bearing in the back of the crank as the torque converter does not need it, but one can easily be added for use with a manual trans.

Yea figured that was the case. I just heard somewhere the cranks were completely different either in length or something like that so wanted to confirm. Still doing a lot of research on what options I have so Im sure Ill post more questions periodically. Thanks again

I converted a 99 3.4 to put in my wife's tip 99 Boxster many years ago. We had to make spacers to lower the drivetrain about one inch (because the intake is much taller), which involved putting in semi-solid mounts for the transmission. The engine wiring harness is missing the wire for the plenum flapper, which can be added. The car was re-coded with a PST2 to think it's a 996 and DME programmed as a 3.4 RoW.

I would also advise fitting a 987 airbox to the car- the stock 2.5 airbox is very restrictive and will choke the engine.
