Howdy folks - sending my 2002 turbo 6 speed transmission into Bill Rayder here soon in Vegas for a rebuild. 50k miles on car.  3 and 4 synchros are buggers and it just developed a whine under power in 5th gear. So, full rebuild planned (new bearings, steel synchros, etc.), really considering the GT2RS gear change swap too for 1/2/3.

Planning to keep car AWD, and power will be whatever a plenum, exhaust and tune get me. Weekend warrior, canyon carving and sport touring car that will see the track 1-2 times per year. When it’s driven, it’s very spirited, but not a dedicated track car. Still needs to be suitable for week long trips in Cali and Colorado and dinner dates.

What can others say about the 1/2/3 GT2RS gear change out?

The other big question is diffs - is it really recommended for Wavetrack TBD or a Guard LSD for my intended use?  OE diff is working fine, but these TBD and LSD are definitely just a "While you're in there consideration" that wasn't in my plans for the car (or at least I haven't driven it hard enough to develop a need for an alternative diff yet!).

This  transmission service wasn’t really in the plans, but the whine in 5th gear made it mandatory while engine out here soon. ~6500 for full rebuild and GR2RS gears, another 3k for wavetrack, and 4K for guard. Thoughts on the diff??

If i were you and had to have the box rebuilt, I would go for the gt2rs gear swap and a guard diff.  I have heard good things about a wavetrack, but for a little more, I'm pretty sure guard is the best in the biz.
