Radio replacement questions

I have an 02 C2 and Im not sure about the harness. It shows it comes with 4 RCA males but they arent red and white. Is this the proper kit, and where do these RCA’s plug in to the new head unit?

Are you changing out the head unit and the amp? What system do you currently have in your car? CDR-220? Nokia/HAES amp in the frunk?

Yes its that cdr 220 with the amp in the front. I would like to leave the amp, sub and speakers the same and change only the radio if possible. The radio I will install is a pioneer 80prs

Ok, not a problem.The Metra kit you attached looks correct. I have basically the same thing in my 996. But remember, the Porsche (Nokia or HAES) amp in the frunk is a 6 channel amplifier. The CDR-220 provided the amp with 4 preamp signals that are distributed across all 6 speakers in your car. As you can see on the wire harness on the left, you'll need to connect the 4 stereo RCA preamp connection to the Pioneer. The blue cable is for the amp switched 12V signal to tell the amp to turn on and off. Normally, you connect that to an aftermarket radio's antenna output.  The Pioneer 80PRS does provide these necessary RCA outputs and so you're good there. Good choice.

Here is a photo of the connections behind by stock radio, there is a black connection, a brown connection, 3 small connections yellow, green, and blue, plus the antena connection. The metra harness shows 1 black connection, and one red with RCA’s, so where do the 3 small ones go?

Are you sure you have an amp?  Option code 490.  The reason I ask is that you have speaker wires - the brown plug.

 

The black plug has the power connections.  The blue-green-yellow plugs go into the orange Metra socket, but only if you have the 490 amp.

 

It looks to me like the wires to the green plug might be for a CD Changer.

I bought a bluetooth device for my CDR-220 from CAI. They provided the exact connections to make it completely plug&play.

I have the same exact set up as Estii. Was this installation successful? I just Installed a JVC unit from Crutchfield.

It powered up, but no sound. Support at Crutchfield said I would have to run new wiring to the front speakers (?).

Is the wiring harness on the left available from Crutchfield or someone else? And, which connector does it go to from the car?

Im still trying to figure mine out. All the info about these 996 radio installs is so vague. What I need to figure out is the red connector, CAI shows the red connector mating to the OEM yellow with 2 yellow wires, 1 black, and 1 brown. But my yellow connector only has 1 red/black wire in it, so im not sure what to connect to the red harness.

Thanks for the update. Please keep me informed. I was going to return the deck I ordered but I think I'll hold on to it for now. Hopefully you'll figure it out .

The JVC I bought, KD-R99MBS, is the only head unit I could find that has a display that I think won't get washed out in direct sunlight.

I looked at the unit you are installing. You'll have to let me know if sunlight is an issue for you, I actually liked it better than the JVC but was worried about the display getting washed out.

I use the 80prs in a different car too. Ive never had washout issues with it.

I ordered the 70-1787 as you did. Now I understand: 1 part number gives you both connectors.

The write up from Pelican Parts has the wiring connections. 

The 70-1787 will be here Wednesday. We'll see how it goes.

That link shows about half of the wires cut and not connected to anything. I just assembled my harness, ill test it no and post back the results.

Hey Man, 

 

Work from the CDR-220 wiring diagram. (see attached). I used this same adapter. The red harness is to connect C1,C2, and C3 from the OEM CDR-220 connections to the aftermarket radio. This will provide you with RCA preamp and amp on/out connections to the aftermarket headunit.  The back harness from CAI is for sockets A and B.

In that diagram C1 is shown where my yellow connector is, showing it had multiple sockets, but my yellow has just 1 socket. The c2 in that diagram is shown in the place where my blue connector is, showing it has just 1 socket for cd changer, but my c2 is a blue connector and has multiple sockets. So this is my problem, is my CDR-220 wired weird, or are these diagrams not accurate?

The option 580 2002 Bose amp is an oddity.  It amplifies the speaker outputs from the head unit.  The 490 option Harman (Haes) amp uses the line outputs from the head unit.  Drop me a PM with your email address if you would like the wiring diagrams.

I got mine working. Heres how it goes if you are in my possition and have just a single black/red wire coming from that yellow socket.

 

New radio harness connects color to color with the metra black harness EXCEPT for the blue amp signal wire.

 

Amp signal from new radio harness connects to red harness ONLY. Metra black harness amp signal is isolated and heat shrinked.

 

Yellow terminal with single black / red wire plugs to red harness. I couldnt disconnect the individual sockets so i pluged them all in, anyway there are only pins for that yellow connect to contact

 

RCA’s from red harness are unused. I will likely clean them up at a later date.

 

Antena adapter is straight forward.

 

NOTE: the connections on the metra black harness are specific, one has the locking back near the bottom, the other has the locking tab towards the center, so you really cant insert them in the wrong slot.

 

I have crimped all of my connections for the testing and trouble shooting. Now that everything is verifyed to be fully functional i will be removing crimps and soldering/ heat shrinking all connections.

Really glad you got it working Estii. How does it sound over the original unit?

I'll hook mine up tomorrow after work.

I'm getting rid of the cassette holder, but the new head unit does take CD's.

Anyone have a CD holder they want to sell?

There is no comparison. And the stock bose sub is actually decent but the cdr-220 does not utilize its full potential. Now with full low, mid, and high range control the whole system sounds much more clear. And this is with ONLY the headunit changed. Speakers, sub and amps are all stock..... for now.
