I noticed a few drops of oil in the bottom of my garage and no puffs of smoke upon drive.

So I took my car into a local trusted indie and it looks like I got the bad news.

They claim my AOS needs replacement and the RMS or IMS seal/o ring needs replacement.  My car is 996 C4S tiptronic w 78k miles and he claims it will be roughly 20 hrs of Labor or roughly $3k w parts. He claims he has to drop the tranny and engine being a tip .

It looks like living w it may not be an option. I've read some forum posts and it seems like this job can all be done at once for $2k w parts. Thoughts?? Or  is this legit? Thanks peeps!

Welcome to RennTech :welcomeani:

I would ask your tech how he determined the AOS is bad, and what does he base his RMS/IMS seal leakage upon.  20 hours is excessive, more like 8-10 hours is realistic to pull the Tip and replace both the AOS and either the RMS or IMS seals.  I would also check with another Porsche oriented shop for a second opinion.

He claims there is oil leaking from both areas after an inspection underneath my car.

20 hrs was a bit excessive in my opinion as well. Are you stating that a competent mechanic should realistically be able to do all that work(AOS, oil, coolant, RMS etc) and put the engine back together in half of that time?

If so I have to believe that they are being deceptive and charging me more than what the dealer would charge in this case.

2nd opinions are worth their weight in gold with it comes to these cars. This shop is probably wanting to cover their butts and so they've over estimated on labor. I would do a manometer reading to rule out the AOS. Check out Jake Raby's YouTube channel and look up the video "Does you AOS suck?".

When I had my clutch serviced and also did the IMS bearing. The RMS was fine, but the IMS was leaking oil from the flange. I went ahead and had the RMS done as well.

If it makes you feel any better,  closest independent to me quoted close to $5,000 for IMS job.  This is on a 2003 Tiptronic.
