I own a partially lowered 1999 996 that I ran through the car wash for the first time. I was feeling like it was a mistake before I did it. the car felt like it was possibly rubbing on the suspension on the left side. I went through the wash with out much event then as I was exiting it and I noticed a check engine light was on. I ran the code and it is showing as 1531. The car is running well still but it does seem a little rough on idle. I would appreciate any input. It is a weekend car so I don't have to drive it but really want to.

Thank you,

P1531: Camshaft actuator bank 1 triggered, no positive action

  • Open circuit in triggering wire
  • Open circuit in B+ supply
  • Actuator faulty

Most likely an electrical issue.

Rule #1 - don't take your car through the car wash!  Our cars just do not like all that power spray water everywhere.  Could it be that water sprayed somewhere it shouldn't have on the engine?  I know those wheel cleaning jets would spray water right up on the engine.  Might let the car and engine dry for a few days, clear the code and see if it comes back.

Thanks for the reply's, It was the first and last time it went through a car wash in 4 years of ownership. It was about two weeks ago and I reset it drove the car about 5 to 10 miles and it came back on. I am afraid to drive it as I do not want to cause any bigger issues.

Like Loren suggested, maybe an electrical issue.  Check the wiring harness for the Bank 1 variocam actuator.  Bank 1 is left side (drivers side) of engine, and the variocam actuator is right next to the heat shield.
