So basically, new to the board not new to a Boxster. I own a 99 base 5 speed. I have been having an issue when I start the car. It will make a certain noise for about 1 or 2 seconds and then go away. It doesn't happen every day, just when she sits for a while...It sounds like a "whirr" kind of noise. No grinding, but does sound like my starter. I have tried in vain to search this noise out. So far I have been unlucky. So I figured I'd ask other owners. Anyone else have this noise and what was the solution? My car does have 105,000 miles on it. US based car. Thanks in advance!

Could be the secondary air pump. It whines at startup sometimes and it will run for about 30 seconds after start.  You said only a couple of seconds, but still might be worth a check, as mine will whine only on occasion and not for the full time it is running. You would hear it at the right side of the car in the engine bay, sounds like it is behind the seat.  If it is a problem you should get an error code indicating SAP.  Mine has done it for years and I’m still waiting for it to completely go. If it is the SAP then I wouldn’t worry too much yet.

I heard it can be cleaned so you can bet your labor. Or you can just replace it with a brand new Bosch SR0808N for $200.

That's your starter.  It's not disengaging from the flywheel on its own.

Not sure if you can access it easy enough and spray a little lubrication on it.

Mine was making the exact same noise at cold starts. I removed the original Bosch and had it remanufactured locally at a specialized shop for alternators and starters for $180 CND and had it back within a week. (Replaced the AOS and cleaned the throttle body while I was in there anyway). Horrible noise at cold starts is gone!
