I have a 2003 Porsche 996, with 45,000 miles and a remanufactured engine. I found this out when I took to a shop to have the IMS bearing replaced. I am trying to determine when the engine was installed.  The engine number is M96/03AT665 68531.  I believe the engine was manufactured in 2005.  The CarFax does not indicate that the engine was replaced.

Thanks much!

For this instance...

M96/03 is the series number.

The first 3 numbers of the engine serial number map to a specific production year (665 maps to 2005 for this engine series). The numbers that follow are the actual engine serial number.

Excellent, thank you. You belief me decipher my engine serial number a couple of years ago and I remember now that you told me that my engines was made in 2005. I don’t think they put it into the car until 2010.

Just adding to what Loren said...

The engine number M96/03AT665 68531 translates to...

M96/03 = 3.6L motor

AT = denotes factory replacement engine

6 = 6 Cylinders

6 = Natural Aspirating Motor

5 = date of manufacture = 2005

68531 = actual serial number

Probably stupid question but where is the engine number?  I have 2000 996 with 58K miles and am trying to determine likelihood of dual-bearing IMS.  2000 was the transition year.  So thankful for your help.

Engine number is on the drivers side next to the oil sump pan...like this.  You are correct.  2000 was a transition year for the IMSB from the dual row bearing to the smaller single row bearing.  As far as I know, on a 2000, there is no way to know whether it has a dual row or single row bearing by using the engine number.  If it were me, I would just plan on having the LN IMS Solution installed as soon as possible.  No sense in pulling the bearing and replacing with another bearing that will need to replaced again in 36-40K miles.

Welcome to RennTech :welcomeani:

Unfortunately, as noted above, 2000-2001 were transitional and could have either a dual or single row bearing.  Equally unfortunate is all the internet garbage about being able to determine which style bearing would be in an engine of this vintage from engine numbers, VIN, production dates, phase of the moon when the car was built, etc.; all of which are complete nonsense.  The ONLY to know which style is in the engine is to take it apart and look.
