On my way to a car show (of course) traveling about 45 mph my 997 4S hesitated a few times and then lost power and started to run very rough. Check Engine Light started to flash as I pulled over. I had the car towed to the house. I plugged-in the Durametric and the only error codes were P0300 Misfiring Checksum Error, P0301 Misfiring Cylinder 1, P0302 Misfiring Cylinder 2, P03003 Misfiring Cylinder 3. I did a search on this forum but nothing specifically found with these error codes and symptoms. Could a bad fuel pump cause misfire error codes to just one bank?

I just checked the fuel pressure (gauge connected to bank 1 fuel rail)... First time i turned the key on the gauge showed over 50psi. I released the pressure and it never came back. I tried turning the ignition key off and on multiple times and I could not get any fuel pressure indication. Now I am guessing there is a relay I need to locate. The fuse is good.

Sounds like a coil pack has failed.

What are you calling a coil pack? Each spark plug has a coil, all three would not fail at the same time.

I just read that the motor needs to be running before the fuel pump on a 996 turns on... Would that be true for a 997? Looking for the relay.

I started the motor and there is just over 50psi of fuel pressure but it will not idle. Motor is rattling quite a bit, probably due to the fact one bank is not firing at all. So a failed solenoid will bring and engine down like this?

Well... I jacked-up the car to inspect and as I was jacking I saw two drops of oil. Thinking to myself maybe the bracket holding the solenoid broke (I read that somewhere on one of the forums), something simple. But when I got under the vehicle there was quite a bit of oil on the front of the cam cover (nearest the passenger compartment). Closer inspection I discovered the cam cover is cracked near the top probably a couple inches long. I have a major issue (possibly broken cam). Now I need to decide how to replace the motor... Rebuild, salvage, new, Jake Raby. Wish me luck.

My wife asked, "how could this happen? You take car of your cars and don't abuse them." My reply... "things break".

When somebody takes good care of their car, there is little that can be said in a situation such as that other than commiserations.

I wish you good luck.

After a few emails and a couple of phone conversations, I have decided to send my car to Flat 6 Innovations. Jake believes it is a broken chain (he has seen these symptoms many times) and I tend to agree. Hopefully I don't have any piston damage and I will get the car back in a few weeks. But if there is piston damage I would get an entire engine reconstruction which takes 8 to 10 months... Although a Raby rebuild would be nice.

Jake Raby called me today. He thinks it's an IMS Bearing failure. I just signed an Authorization for him to remove and inspect the motor.

Yikes!! So the larger stock bearings do fail too although not nearly as common as the smaller bearimgs.

Hope most parts are salvageable.

No damage to the block or heads. I am going for the full reconstruction and increasing performance to Jake's "Performer" Stage 1 motor. Jake is inspecting the failed IMS bearing and shaft very closely. This is the first 997 street car he has seen with the IMS bearing failure.

Very nice with an upgraded engine. Just wondering how many miles on the engine and any mods on the IMSB? For the pics, looks like it's been taken care of very well.

98K on the engine, no mods on the IMSB. I use Red Line 10W40 every 3K miles but I am not the original owner. I have owned this car for 3 years and put approximately 38K miles on it since I purchased.

I will let you know what Jake finds... He is investigating every part of the motor.

I received a call from Jake and he said they started assembly work on the motor this week. Right on schedule with the dates he gave me back in August. Pictures coming soon.

I also received my scissor lift today. I highly, highly, recommend these scissor lifts by Twin Busch. These things are built and heavy duty. For the price you will have a hard time finding anything comparable. Check-out the video. I am now ready to do oil changes when the Jӓger4Smobile comes back home.
