When starting first thing my engine makes a growl noise, could this be a chain tensioner pumping up , and the noise is in fact the timming chains running over the tensioners.. it only lasts for a fraction of a second. The noise is not their if  I  re- start it within a few hours.  Have had new water pump in last 12 months. Any help thanks

Welcome to RennTech :welcomeani:

The M96/97 engines are famous for start up noises, primarily caused by the hydraulic chain tensioners bleeding down while sitting (Porsche updated these a couple of times to try and help with this).  Eventually, they will need to be changed, but in the meanwhile switching to an oil with higher film strength can help reduce the issue.

Is this just the o-ring on the tensioners failing or is there an internal spring or similar loosing tension?

The tensioners have internal components that wear.
