That is just the engine type. Typically Porsche changed that number every year or so when improvements were made.

Realize that the 2.7-liter air-cooled engine could easily be modified to 3 (or more) liter engines. Sometimes folks do not realize this until they take it apart and see a different crankshaft or cylinders.

So, what shipped with the car is not always what is in the car today...

For a 1976 911 and 911 Targa - Yes.

I did not see a different listing for 911 S Targa. I do not know about RoW cars but US cars for that year were all 911 S. I owned one.

How about this engine #, 6362810? Supposed to belong to a -74 911 Sportomatic Targa. VIN 9114110999.

 

Is there a table showing these numbers available online somewhere? Have searched, but can`t find...

That engine serial number is from an engine built in 1976.

Type 911.81

HP 165

Liters 2.7
