Hello, I'm new to the Forum and I'm looking to get a porsche sometime this year.  I Wasn't sure where to put this post. I've been doing research to try and figure out the mechanical differences between the base and S trim models. So in the 986 models they're some pretty drastic differences. 5 spd, hollow axles, smaller outer hubs, much smaller brakes, smaller stabilizer bars, and smaller engine. I'm not sure if the 6spd optional changed the axles or hubs? But, it didn't change the brakes. When the 986 S trim has a Stout 6spd "600+hp" with taller gears than base, solid axles, larger hubs, much larger brakes, larger stabilizer bars, and the obvious larger engine. Making it a drastically different car mechanically speaking. So, onto the 987 cayman

2007 Base 987 v1
Engine: 2687cc, 85.5mm bore, 245hp, 11.3:1
Brakes: Front 298mm x 24mm, Rear 299mm x 20mm (4piston, crossdrilled rotors)
Transaxle: 5spd (1st=3.5,2nd=2.12,1.43,1.09,.84,Axle 3.75) 6spd(1st=3.67, 2.05, 1.41, 1.13, .97, .82,Axle 3.875) Is this a weak transaxle like the 5 spd?
Wheels 17" slightly shorter tires, more narrow. Somehow the track is wider than S trim? wheel offset?
I won't go into the tiptronic because they're junk for a sportscar but, the base has a slightly taller axle gear.
Axle Size: Unknown
Hubs: Unknown

2007 S trim 987 v1
Engine: 3387cc, 96mm bore, 295hp, 11.1:1
Brakes: Front 318mm x 28mm Rear 299mm x 24mm (4piston, cross drilled rotors) Brakes are taller and wider in front wider in back
Transaxle: 6spd (1st=3.31,1.95,1.41,1.13,.97,.82, Axle 3.875) entirely different than base 6 spd other than Axle gear. Is this a Stout transmission?
Axle size: Unknown
Hubs: unknown

2010 Base 987 v2
Engine: 2893cc, 88mm bore, 265hp, 11.5:1, Sequential multipoint fuel injection
Brakes: Front 318mm, Rear 299mm thickness unknown (4piston, vented crossdrilled rotors)
Transaxle: 6spd (1st=3.667, 2nd=2.05, 1.407, 1.133, .972, .841, final 3.875)
PDK: (1st=3.909, 2.292, 1.654, 1.303, 1.081, .881, .617, Final 3.25)
Wheels 17"
Axle size: Unknown
Hubs: Unknown

2010 S trim 987 v2
Engine: 3436cc, 97mm bore, 320hp, 12.5:1, Direct Fuel Injection Considerably Higher compression ratio
Brakes: Front 318mm, Rear 299mm thickness unknown (4piston, vented cross drilled rotors) Same brakes!
Transaxle: 6spd (1st=3.308, 2nd=1.95, 1.407, 1.133, .95, .81, final 3.889) Slightly shorter gears than the base
PDK: (1st=3.909, 2.292, 1.654, 1.303, 1.081, .881, .617, Final 3.25) Looks to be the Same pdk transmission
Wheels 18" Slightly taller tires, Wider yet somehow track is narrower 0.2"?
Axle size: Unknown
Hub size: Unknown

The v1 987 seems to be very similar to the 986. Does this mean the Base 987.1's have hollow axles, smaller hubs? Does all of this get fixed for 987.2? I'm asking if the base and S trim have the same axles and hubs since the brakes are now the same. Stabilizers the same on 987's? Does the 987.2 Base model transaxle stand up to HP or is it like the 986 and everything in the drive train is much weaker? I kinda like the taller 1st and 2nd gear of the 987.2 base but, if they transaxle is weak I don't want it. The PDK looks to be identical does this mean the axles and hubs would be the same? I eventually want a good amount of power so, I'm worried about the base models. I wouldn't consider a 986 base. If anyone has any insight they would like to share it would help me a lot.

Anyone know if the 987.2 base uses the same transaxle hubs and axles as the S trim?

Same axles hub but different axles.

As well axles are different between PDK cars and 6-speed cars of the S series.

This can be self-answered by spending a bit of time at a parts website comparing part numbers..
