Driver side window does not drop when opening the door. I can hear the mechanism work when I slowly open the handles but it is not dropping the window. The window goes up and down just fine in regular operation. I've tried "retraining" the windows but no luck. Any ideas? Regulator issue?

What about disconnecting the battery and see if that resets the computer.  However, from your post it sounds more mechanical...  but disconnecting the battery can't hurt...

I had the same problem with my window. I tried replacing the micro switch, but I finally fixed it by replacing the door lock actuator. I found a good used part. No more problems.

I'm seeing the same problem with my 986 driver's side window.  I'm curious how the door lock actuator would have any impact on it.  I can get it to "work" if I help the window but to me it seems like something isn't tight.

Any info is appreciated!

I had the same problem. There is a rubber coupling between the motor and window cable drive pulley. The rubber softens with age to the point where the window barely moves when the handle is operated, however when the window is fully opened or closed everything appears fine. The mechanism can be stripped very easily, I made replacement rubber coupling inserts just using a Stanley knife and 8mm rubber gasket material. The end result was a perfect cure that cost pennies.

I have a similar issue with the passenger door. Seems to only happen when it's hot (Seattle hot, over 70). The window does not move at all and the red light is continually on for the door lock switch on the dash.

Seems weird that it's only when it's warm. Window goes up and down. I've re-trained the window stops but it doesn't help. I'm thinking it's the door lock actuator. Ideas? Toddmac12, where did you get the good used part for $60?

Replace the window regulator with an OE new regulator.  The cables develop slack over time.  i would do that before jumping into other issues.  Do not go cheap on the replacement part...get an OE part.  This is a good technical article from Pelican parts on how to do it - http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Porsche-996-997-Carrera/77-BODY-Replacing_Your_Window_Regulator_and_Motor/77-BODY-Replacing_Your_Window_Regulator_and_Motor.htm

The cables do indeed go slack and can cause this problem - there is a spring tensioning system on the cables that can be adjusted to take up the slack - and it's really simple to do this by just pulling out the clips (my car had three on each side), moving out the 'outer' part of the cables to take out the slack on the 'inner' part, the reinserting the clips in new positions leaving the cables tight. I did this but on my car this did not resolve the problem. There was so little movement when the door handle was operated that the window still caught the roof frame when the door was opened. Replacing the coupling rubbers was the cure for me - the window drops nearly an inch now and what's more it's really fast moving - no more problems with the glass 'catching' when the doors are opened! This problem was a real irritation to me and I had already replaced the window mech and tensioned the wires with no success!

The newest 996 car is at least 12 years old - with that in mind there are things that will wear out.

If it were my car I would replace the window regulator and likely be good for another 10-15 years. JMHO

I was able to find one on eBay.
