I have recently bought a 2005 987 2.7.

The engine temperature instrument has just stopped working and the red light is flashing.

The fault is reporting as instrument failure, I think the code is CDS T5.

Any ideas? I hope its a simple fix...

On the assumption that the engine was not overheating immediately prior, you may well find that after the car has cooled down, the gauge will start working again as normal.

 

I don't recognise that code but if you can clear it with your reader, try that and see if the code recurs.

"The warning light lights up if the coolant temperature is too high. The warning light also flashes if the coolant level is too low or the engine-compartment blower is not functioning."

 

Check the coolant level and also the radiator fans to make sure they are working.

Thanks all for your help.

So, I took the car to a Porsche specialist this morning. On the way there, the temp gauge started working and the problem self cured. He plugged in his diagnostics and cleared the faults on the system, saying he reckoned the car had sat for some time with the battery disconnected and this often resulted in random codes.

This is in line with other forum items on the subject, where clearing the car fault code cured the problem.

By the way, it said 'instrument fault', no evidence of the car overheating and their was plenty of coolant.

Good for you. If you have the service history on the car, you may want check to see if the work on the TSB mentioned above was carried out.

 

That TSB was specific to the car that you now own and appears to have had something to do with the problem you encountered.

I took the car to Porsche as my local specialist dealer did not have the necessary software for this reprogramming. After an initial reset, it was established the engine required a new sender. Once this was fitted, the engine was reprogrammed successfully and the instrument is now working correctly.
