Hello All, Im new here and this site has helped so much. Im trying to fix these 5 codes that just came up recently. Car is a 97 Porsche boxster. I dont think any TSB or recalls have been done to it if there are any that would help. Please give me your insight Toolpants, Loren! Anyone with a larger porsche brain then I! Thank you.

Here is what I could pull up:

p1117- oxygen sensor bank1 sensor 2

Oxygen Sensor Heating 1 After Catalytic Converter - Below Lower Limit

p0140-Oxygen Sensor After Catalytic Converter (cylinders 1 - 3) - Interruption of Signal

p1125- cylinder 4-6

Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Area 1 (Cylinders 4 - 6) - Lean Threshold

p1123- cylinder 1-3

Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Area 1 (Cylinders 1 - 3) - Lean Threshold

p1121

Oxygen Sensor Heating 2 After Catalytic Converter - Below Lower Limit

I think I need to replace an o2 sensor? Do I replace the one in the Cat or outside on the pipe and where is this darn sucker I keep hearing about! Pics would be greatly appreciated

Looks to me like your after cat O2 sensor heaters are gone on both sides (P1117 and P1121).

Also, looks like the O2 sensor on bank 1-3 is open (P0140).

I think the P1125 and P1123 are results of no heaters on either after cat O2 sensor. Looks like you need two new after cat O2 sensors to me.

Bob Grisby said (at the Sunnyvale tech session) on Saturday that the latest O2 sensors could go 60k miles but some of the early 90's models only went about 60k miles. How many miles on your car?

The car has 75k. So im looking to change which 2 oxygen sensors? The ones INside the cat or on the pipe itself? I get confused which are which. Thanks for the fast reply LOREN!

After the cats - so the ones on the tailpipe side of the cats.

You will need a cat wrench or a 22 mm wrench. Do not get any oil (or any other substance) on the sensor. The sensor should come with high temp antiseize but again don't touch that and then the sensor.

Ok I just an examine to the o2 sensors, and guess what! If you're talking about the ones that are at the ends of the cats then the one on the passenger side o2 sensor fell out and wasnt even plugged in!!!! AHHG! Dam mechanic! Would this help any of my CEL?? I plugged it back in. Would I still need to change 1 o2 sensor now? Or both? Loren Help!

Plug em back in (hope they or the cats aren't damaged) and then clear all the codes. Drive it and wait. With a little luck you won't get any codes.

Time to find a new mechanic

Hopefully nothing is damaged either Loren, Only the electrical plug was undone, The o2 sensor was still in the CAT itself. Only the one of the passenger side was out the driver side was in and plugged in. Hopefully will this 1 o2 sensor cancel out all 5 CELs? Lol that would be amazing..

Well After a small trip last night and this morning the infamous CEL is back. With only 3 codes now I guess plugging the passenger side o2 sensor did help with 2 codes. I now only have these to worry about:

p1117- oxygen sensor bank1 sensor 2

Oxygen Sensor Heating 1 After Catalytic Converter - Below Lower Limit

p1125- cylinder 4-6

Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Area 1 (Cylinders 4 - 6) - Lean Threshold

p1123- cylinder 1-3

Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Area 1 (Cylinders 1 - 3) - Lean Threshold

So what do you think Loren? Toolpants? Any member with knowledge?

Replace the O2 sensor (after cat) passenger side. Look for any other obvious air leaks - perhaps the mechanic forgot to plug in a hose or two. Reset the codes and hope that is the last of them.

Well, the codes give say the sensor 1 is bad (sensor 1 - cylinders 1 to 3) for sure. Will it cure the other fault on the other side? You won't know until you replace the bad sensor and clear the codes. If they come back then you need to find out where the next problem lies.

Like most compound problems the only way to fix them is to separate the variables and fix the problems one at a time.

hi everyone,

I know this is my first post...but i've been reading this forum for awhile...and have learned alot...I'm a new owner of a 99 Boxster with 68K miles....and love driving my car! I'm really appreciative that people like me have people lilke Loren, Toolpants and Mike Focke to help us out when we have a problem....and sadly i have a problem now!

My CEL is on and I have the same 5 codes that skt had...

p1117 - oxygen sensor bank1 sensor 2 Oxygen Sensor Heating 1 After Catalytic Converter - Below Lower Limit

p0140 - Oxygen Sensor After Catalytic Converter (cylinders 1 - 3) - Interruption of Signal

p1125 - cylinder 4-6 Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Area 1 (Cylinders 4 - 6) - Lean Threshold

p1123- cylinder 1-3 Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Area 1 (Cylinders 1 - 3) - Lean Threshold

p1121 - Oxygen Sensor Heating 2 After Catalytic Converter - Below Lower Limit

After I read this thread, i went ahead and replaced my 2 oxygen sensors after the cat with the Bosch OE type (#13806). I got the parts online and had my local mechanic install them for me...I figured it's DIY so I didn't have to go to a Porsche mechanic...

Well, after a few miles of driving, the CEL came on again :( ...and i read the codes and got the same 5 ones....

Can anyone please help? I figure it might be my MAF and so might go ahead an clean it or replace it....but that doesnt explain P1117, P0140 and P1121.

Could it be my DME? Or maybe the contact/connection points where the oxygen sensors plug in are dirty?

Thanks in advance for any help and input. Maybe i should just throw in the towel now and bring it to my Porsche mechanic....but that will be costly i'm sure!

Cheers,

kane

ps: the car runs great...steady when idle, decent gas mileage as far as i can tell, starts right, steady and good power....

wow, I would like to show you guys how to test instead of guessing and throwing parts at the car. There can be so many possible causes, but you need a diagnostic plan and an understanding of how this engine management system truley works.

I am a professional Porsche Master tech and all this advise giving on maybe its this or that is impressing.

Take it to the dealer and have the shop foreman look at it. Last thing you want to do is make this car a money pit.

Thanks for the advice Viz...yeah I'm going to take it to my Porsche guy to take a look....well at least I have 2 new oxygen sensors now..the old ones were pretty roughed up!

cheers,

kane
