996 Engine hood conversion form C2 to C4S

I am trying to find information about an engine 996 engine hood design change. I have a 02 C2 , and want to have the classic reflector strip between the rear lights  on the hood as on the C4S. I thought about a sticker solution , but which seemed ugly. Then I thought to take a factory CS4 hood - which I hoped to swap easily (...just bolts...30 min or so...). Got a grey OEM unit from a 03 CS4 on ebay (w/o spending a fortune as most sellers ask for) , and hoped a paint job is all I would need....

The hood featured quite a few changes in design (the whole thing is from  fiber glass (vs. steel)), and the clearance to the body panels is still there, yet noticeable smaller. The latter may workable (Fiberglass base could be made slightly narrower before getting it painted....) . However, where I am stuck is that the hood seems a few cm longer, and does not fit due to contact with bumper. My impression is that  I need at least a different bumper as well as rear lights. My question would be, whether sb. tried this type of conversion before/whether this is possible at all w/o major body change. Attaching 2 pix with both hoods on my car...

Factory engine lids are not fiberglass.

The coupe version is different from the cabriolet version. As are the mounting hinges.

The rear spoiler drive mechanism for the C4S is also different

The C4S rear bumper is also different will not likely fit your car without modification - because your car is a narrow wheelbase car and C4S is a wide body (like the Turbo).

The taillights are also different and like the bumper may not fit in your narrow body car.

 

In my opinion this is going to be an expense conversion if you want to do it right.

I would agree with Loren on this one. Could be done, but you would need to trim the bottom of the new lid, reseal it, smooth it out and repaint. If your looking for a rear upgrade the new led tail lights/third brake lights and a new style bumper would be less hassle and would be almost guarantee to look right.

loren, ddavidoff -thanks for your input. looks indeed like a bigger project, for just one of a series of lovely cs4 features i thought simply "bolt-on"on my car (i regret  not having taken the opportunity to buy a cheap 04 CS4 cab when i had the choice ($27k was very tempting, but it was in aweful mech & cosm condition compared to the near perfect c2 i got the same day.). for sure i am not a big fan of aftermarket upgrades upgrade the rear to newer model as it remains an 02 after all . to get the strip i will likely try  to get back to make my sticker-based strip idea  - trying to make a decent 10 ft view). otherwise, getting back to the cs4 hood in have - , is there a chance to at least tell whether factory- or not ( concerned about your comment in that factory should be metal??) based on the pn 996 512 221 01 ( see attached pic of the label on tge cs4 hood i have)

Thanks folks for the  input. Decided to leave the drivers car w/o changes to body style, and will be looking for the proper car instead to fix the look in the future. Yet I  could not resist to get sth. Changed minimal invasively to accomplish some hint of a connection between the lights to make the real look a bit more classic .... Sharing couple of  pics  :)

Have you tried the conversion with C4/turbo coupe engine lid?

I see.Thank you for the tip.

The C4S engine lid would be modified to fit NB by a custom body specialist.

So, the tail light and rear bumper would be used the existing one.

Good point. I still have this C4s hood assembly like you show (Got that time from wicked motorsports )  , and have not thought about trying this again after switching my car from a C2 coupe to a C4 cab.

 

I can double-check dimensions of the lifting mech interfaces if this helps.   Besides that, as loren said, a lot needs to be changed to make this conversion happen.

I think the efficient way is the trimming C2's engine lid and put on the center reflector.

Is the width size same?

 

I'm going to meet the specialist and we will decide which mod would be better for this converson.

see images attached. the 02 C4 spoiler lifting mechanism on the 04 c4s hood. To me this mechanically  a perfect fit....and operates proper. Sure pn’ may be different for the assy , but likely for different reasons ( i could imagine the electrical connections but i believe this can be made compatible as well). 

However you seem to have decided to do metal work instead. give it a try and i an sure more folks here would love to see the result.

 

For my c4 cab  i also still want to change the rear .  The strip is still has its appeal to me, but i badly want a big wing (993 rsr  or gt2  type) and much wider hips now ( bolt on flares type ). Sounds possibly like a super bad idea, but it is actually an  alternative manufacturing technology i am working on for a non-car project , but which may yield some significant shape improvements to my 996 as well.

Btw- the main difference i observed was the wing side hinge part , which connects to the actuator. the c4s part is the one i hold with the pliers in the image.

This is exactly what I needed to see, thanks.

 

I just put a regular Carrera wing assembly

on my C4S and ran into an alignment problem. Spoiler binding on the back end of the deck lid when going down. Figured there was an offset bracket or something. Now to actually find a pair…..
