CEL - EVAP Codes

Hello,

I am working on a 2000 Boxster S with 40,000 miles on the clock. The CEL came on and I had a mechanic pull the code and he got an EVAP code, don't know the exact number. He told me there was a massive air leak somewhere in the system.

We proceeded to do a smoke test to see where the leak was but instead the smoke just came out of the vent near the rear spoiler.

2 things...

1.) Is this not supposed to be a closed loop system? Why is there a vent?

2.)Where do I go now, is there a common problem with these cars? This CEL is driving me crazy.
