Hi all

 

My 1999 Porsche 996 C2 Tiptronic has just started making this noise on startup about 2 weeks ago. It only happens on cold startup and lasts 30 seconds. It sounds a bit like a circular saw, and is slowly getting louder. It seems to be distinct from the fan that also comes on in the engine compartment at startup. All gauges are normal, there are no warning lights, and the car performs as normal.

 

Anyone have an idea what it could be?

It's your SAI pump. Either remove it and relube the bearing or get a used/new unit. New Bosch ones are like $250 each.

Wow! Thanks so much for that lightning quick response!

 

This is very reassuring news, as I was thinking it could be something a lot worse. I have just ordered a 2nd hand unit from the UK from a well-known auction site, to be delivered here to me in France in a few days time. I will then have to brave the freezing temperatures to change it. I've just checked my Bentley manual, which is of no help on replacement, and all I can find on the net so far via search engine are Boxster replacement instructions. I'm just wondering if replacement is any different in terms of access on a 996, and how much time replacement might take (can't make out what needs to be removed to get to the pump). I'm assuming I can keep driving the car for now, as long as the pump is just whining.

Sure and welcome to Renntech!

 

The pump is very accessible on a 996 (left side of engine bay with lots of room to work on) and the replacement should be very obvious once you look at it. I say ~1hr for a first timer. It would be good if you can bench test the used pump and make sure it's running well with no whining before you spend the effort to install it. Yes, no problem keep driving the car. The noise is just annoying but it won't hurt the engine.

Yes, I'll definitely test it first. I've also noted to check the hose is clean, and that the inside of the pump is clean before installing. I'll wait for the part to arrive, try it out and report back.

So I bought a 2nd hand pump from a well-known auction site for £22/25€, and it was a 10 minute job to fit it with a 10mm socket. Only hiccup was getting the electrical connector off and managed to break a small bit off despite taking care, but the good news is it all works perfectly now. So many thanks again for the advice.

 

Bad news is that changing the pump has revealed a new noise, which happens as I accelerate, but most on deceleration. I'm guessing it might be one of the tensioners ... I'll wait until the snow has cleared before I tackle this one.

Glad you got it sorted! You can remove the serpentine belt and spin all the pulleys (including the alternator, power steering pump and a/c compressor) by hand to feel for roughness and listen for noise.

Thanks for posting the video, my car is making the same noise and it's been driving me nuts.
