Top Question/Problem

I recently had a new top put on my 2000 Boxster. I have begun to notice that occasionally when putting the top up that on the drivers side the top goes to the outside of the black molding that runs up the end of the window rather than on the inside. I spoke with the guy who put the top on and he mentioned that there is cable with a spring on each end that "pulls" the top in so that it will go on the inside of the molding and indiacted that it might be possible to adjust that or to replace the cables. Does this sound rigth to anyone?

Yes, it looks exactly like that. What's the fix?

Your guy is right. There is some kind of spring and the tension needs to be checked. Porsche issued a TSB in 1997 about this.

I got it back today and he showed me the "spring" and had the TSB. He turned it over to get more tension and greased an area that rubs and it seems to be fine right now.

Ok, so I read the TSB.

So how do you access the forward tension spring for the cable? Is it under the liner or do you have to remove the window molding?

Okay! I got it fixed in 5 mins.

The TSB with the same number on AllDataDIY.com was different than the one on RennTech.

I reversed the tensioner and all is good.

Always use the whole TSB number. Porsche reuses the 4 digit number when the topic area is the same. For example there are 3 TSBs that have the 6128 number but they are actually 9/97 6128, 3/04 6128, and 3/99 6128.

I have had my top replaced and after the replacement it had exactly this problem. I checked the spring and they do seem not tight enough, I am confident that will be my solution so I'd like to thank ToolPants for puting up the picture, I didn't really know how to describe the problem and it showed so clearly what I had that I went right away to get the information in the TSB

Just spent $600.00 bucks for a new top due to this problem. Arggggh!

Went through hell with a local soft top guy that caused me great pain and aggravation as I found out that he really knows less then me and I was stupid enough to pay $600.00

Learned a lesson here. That's for sure.

Wow... my top always looked like this and I didn't even think it was meant to be any different.
