Hi Everyone,

I just thought I'd post here beforeI take my car down to the shop to see if anyone has experienced anything similar.

I've got a 1999 996 Carrera 4 Cabrio manual gearshift.  There is a whirring sound that seems to be coming from midway down the car, near the gear lever.  The sound changes with the speed of the car, not the speed of the engine, so I'm thinking it's transmission based.  I guess it sounds a bit like a badly lubricated bearing?? The car has spent periods of its life off the road and so is not excessively high mileage, about 86000, but a lot of that has been around the city over bumpy roads and speed bumps.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific but I was just wondering if anyone out there had any ideas.

Also.. does anyone know of a good garage where I can take it in London, UK?

Many thanks,

Andy

No idea about London.  I would start by getting your transmission fluid checked and changed.  I have heard, but not experienced, that the bearings in the gearbox can go bad.  A change of transmission fluid may reveal some metal particles if that is the case.  There is also a magnetic plug in the gearbox that can be reached from the drain plug hole.  Have to stick a finger in there to feel if there is anything on it.
