i'm in the process of replacing the fuel filter on my2000 996 cab.  i removed both plastic brackets that hold the aluminum coolant pipes so that i can spread them apart.  it looks like i also need to remove the bracket that holds the fuel filter in place so i can spread the pipes even further.  is there any other tricks?  will the filter slip through the space where i've marked with an red X?  thanks for the help.

all good!  it's a real tight fit but after removing the two coolant pipe brackets and spreading the pipes apart the fuel filter slides out where the pipes widen.   it sure will be a lot easier next time.

Hey, this is just the thread I wanted to see. My '99 looks the same as yours with the extra plate from the transmission. I was under the car for about a half hour trying to figure out where to pull the filter from. I figured it slid all the way back by the tranny but I couldnt separate the pipes enough to pull the fuel line off. I didnt have the second plastic holder off so I will try again and take them both off and spread the pipes.

Just did mine. It will fit out the back above the pipes and come out by the transmission. What a pain tho.
