Just replaced the original Porsche muffler/silencer boxes with Dansk OE-style stainless, on my low mileage 2003 C2 Targa. The originals had split and rusted seams, and everything else under there, bracket long bolts, studs, clamps etc was rusted as well. Par for the course it seems.

But with wheels and bumper off you can see just how exposed to road spray and grit are the mufflers and their mounting hardware. But why did Porsche not continue the rear wheel arch liner down further in front of the mufflers to protect them better? It stops about 12" above the bottom of the wheel arch on both 996 and 997 cars. It would not be difficult to make a wheel arch extension of hard plastic to fill the gap - but perhaps the mufflers need to be exposed to stay cool. Any ideas?
