Unfortunately this is an all too common required repair on 996 and 997 cabrios.

Has anyone tried replacing the O rings themselves versus exchanging for rebuilt units or sending them out to be rebuilt?

Here's someone selling a DIY kit on Ebay.  Anyone have experience with this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/271688190195

Don't think that kit will solve anything .Take a close look at the cylinders -the ends are machine crimped and must be drilled out to get at the real seals .Plus the hose ends need to be modified and resealed .It's  not a easy diy project

Agree with dcdrechsel ====  I have tried using a rebuilder - some work some don't.  Watch ebay sometimes you can buy at good price.  Remember to get new upgraded cylinders.

Good luck,

There are people who do rebuild them and do a professional job .I used Cabriolet Hydraulics in Florida and they work perfectly .In fact their website also covers removing and replacing .
