Dye coming out with the condensate from the evaporator drain confirms my hunch, a leaking evaporator. Looking at the more popular suppliers, the evaporator comes in a complete housing. Isnt there a core replacement part anywhere? Is it the same for the 996 and 997.1. My car is a C2S 997.2?

hi  Loren, yes you are right. the porsche parts catalog indicates the whole unit. but i really think its crazy spending that much money on an aluminum radiator that cost $200 max! there are parts for the heater, blower, thermostats, expansion valves, receiver driers etc etc. but$1400 on something where the problem is a cheap part.. im hoping someone has actually compared the evaporator core of the 997.2 with the .1 or the 996's. reason is the evaporator care can actually be removed from the assy and replaced individually! you just need to remove a few screws... This is like replacing the whole unit just because the foam insulation on the flaps are flying our of the vents!! that can be remedied by buying $10 worth of foam and some glue!! not $1400. im sure the information we can gather here in this post will be helping other porsche enthusiasts that will encounter the same problem.. an aftermarket repalcement evaporator core for a 996 cost less than $100 and a better brand around $250 vs $1700 for oem assy. that is a lot of money!
