I just purchased a C4S.  Engine was rebuilt, based on research I did, looks like from IMS failure.  Has new clutch, new fly wheel, etc.

Had a PPI done at Porsche dealer.  Everything seemed to check out, minus a minor cosmetic issues.  Car has 23K miles.

Has anyone had any issues with an engine rebuild being covered by an extend warranty.  I did buy and extended warranty through my credit union... I'm not anticipating any issues with the car, but I wanted to ask some of you who've had more experience.

Any other precautions I should consider?  Car looks, feels, and sounds great.

I'm not sure if you are confusing terms here; does the car have a "rebuilt engine", or a "factory remanufactured engine"?  One way of tell is to look at the engine number (just above the oil sump cover rail on the driver's side), checking for the letters "AT" in the number sequence.  If it is an AT engine, it is a factory remanufactured engine, which will have its own Porsche factory warrantee, separate from the car.  If it was rebuilt by a third party, you are kind of in a grey zone as the rebuild quality and/or warrantee is an unknown, and may not extend to a second owner.

Third party extended warranties are a total crap shoot; some are OK coverage, others not so much.  Like most legal documents, the devil is always in the details of the contract.  Some have had good luck with these policies, but many have found them to be very lacking, to the point of being nearly useless.  You need to read all of the fine print, looking for what is covered, and what is excluded.  You also need to look at how payment for repairs is determined and made.  Many shops, mine included, will no longer deal directly with firms offering this coverage as they try to dictate what the hourly labor rates should be, where replacement parts can be sourced from, and most are notoriously slow payers when invoiced by the repair shops.

Appreciate the reply. I'll check the engine, and look for AT. Work was done at ASE cert facility. I asked the Porsche facility that performed the PPI if they felt this would be an issue and they didn't. Hopefully won't have any problems.

Point of clarification... this cs4 is a new engine rebuild.

Ok, but I am not sure what that means.  Is it an "AT" engine?

JFP, if my engine is an 'AT' engine, which it is and we (my indy) suspect it was done in 2005 based on the low numbers (M096/03AT66566540)

(M96.03 /hp 320/2005 665 501 > 60000 from the table that Loren supplied).

How long is the Porsche warranty? I am guessing the warranty is over, I am just curious who did the work...

And, I actually tried to find the warranty through Porsche and could not nail it down. It definitely is an 'AT' engine so, it should be catalogued somewhere. If not with Porsche of NA, where/who?

Any ideas?

Sorry if this is off topic. I wasn't sure.

Thank you,

Julie

The usual factory warranty was two years, so it is long over.  As it was done in 05, it is most likely the oversized IMS version which cannot be upgraded without tearing the engine apart.  Many "AT" engines were done by dealers, but some were also done by independent shops.  If you dealer cannot find it in the car's service records, it was done outside the dealership network.
