Hi !

I Try to discover a noise which i have now for one year. Nobody can tell me exactly where its coming from. It occured last year when i changed my alternator. I was pointing to this part but the company which delivered that part is telling me it cant be. "If the alternator is working so the noise is something else"

My porsche shop changed some pulleys. Dont know excatly if all. Water pump is new. Alternator new.

Maybe somebody has a idea when watching the video clip.

Good morning to Belgium. I did not try. Is it possible to do it for a short time?

 

Yes, you can do it for a short time, just watch the engine temp. Then you already know for sure that it was not/is associated with the peripheral devices of the engine. Reminder, the V-belt can make such a noise also.

Ok. The belt cant be the reason. It was changed some weeks before with the pulleys.

take the belt off and start the engine and hope you don't hear the noise.

 

Step 2 will be to feel all the pulleys for play and smoothness.

 

That noise honestly sounds like something internal/reciprocating though....

Thank you. Maybe my question sound stupid now. I have to take out the belt completely or its enough just to release the tensioner?

The idea is to remove the belt completely and run the engine briefly (say a couple of min or less). Once the belt is removed, nothing is rotating except the engine so if the noise is still there, that means the source of the noise is the engine. If the noise goes away, that means the noise comes from one of he pulleys or accessories such as alternator, power steering pump, and a/c compressor. 

 

With the belt off and engine off, you can hand spin each component to feel for noise and roughness.

Thank you Duncan. Just was wondering if possible to save some time an dont remove the belt in total. But i understand but to take it out completely
