996 Carrera - Help with Remote Control fault and Lifter Noise issue...

Recommended Posts

Hello All;

I have bought a 996 Carrera MY 1998 @ 98.000km (54.000 Miles) wih Tiptronic - 3.4 Liter

I have some issues with my car; I hope someone can help with me in this forum.

Because; in my hometown; there are not much Porsche private services, and the current services are not much qualified with these kind of issues.

They are expert just for standard servicing operations :(

Only 1 authorized service in this place; but the prices 3 or 4 times higher than your countries :(

My car's engine renewed @ 85.000 km (renewed means main crank changed with the new one; and the all parts checked and cleaned repairman said)

I bought @ 89.000 km

First; I changed the oil and filters when I bought it; with Motul X-Cess 8100 5W-40 + added Liqui Moly Ceratec;

Issues and questions:

·         after 8000 km; I decided to renew oil again to keep away from IMS things...

·         I put again Motul 5W-40 and Ceratec, but it started to make a little bit valve lifter noises

·         my serviceman said that is wrong thing that I have to put Mobil1 0W-40 and not using Ceratec

·         I listened him and put Mobil1 New Life 0W-40 with the new oil filter

·         Then it started to make more noise :(

Do you think the oil additives like Liqui Moly Hydro Valve additives fix this?

Or what should be your suggestions?

·         when I asked to him about IMS bearing flange; he said it has o-ring with O type (old type, not rectangular)

Do you think should I have to change this flange with the new type? Will I get any fault because of this?

·         We changed the A/T fluid; but we could not change oil for differential; because there is no drain hole under it?

Do you know how do we change its fluid?

·         I bought a new remote controller from Germany dealer; bring it to my local dealer to program it;

·         It wored fine but after 1 week; it stopped to work :(

·         When I checked it with china PIWIS + Durametric it gave an error like: Terminal 86S ....

Do you think why it started to stop? What should I do?

·         It's rear spoiler seems work fine; but when it started to open or close; the red light is coming on.

·         After 120 km/h it is always opening.

·         But below 60 km/h it is not ALWAYS closing, it is closing sometimes, but not all the times.

·         I tried to fix this but I could not, I could just make it greasy and cut the noises during working.

There is some micro switches, but I think the error/issue is related with them, where can I find right scheme for these switches?

Last one;

I read some live info from Durametric;

Can someone analyze them?

Is there anything wrong after engine renew by my serviceman?

Should I be careful or worried about something?

Thank you very much for your supports....

Welcome to Renntech and congratulations on your new purchase, skuyumcu.

Changing the oil more frequently will likely reduce your chances of having IMS issues (by removing the contaminants), but this is just only one part of the equation. In my own case, using my Boxster as a [real] daily driver (300,000 km) has greatly helped me in keeping it in very good overall running conditions. It is not uncommon to hear of garage queens to have more problems than those of daily drivers.

As per your oil questions, my suggestion is that before starting to add all these different products, create a baseline by just replacing the oil, and at the same time get to know 'all the different sounds' of your new car.

I use Liqui Moly 5W40 oil, and it works great (from my perspective, of course, 300,000 km and it doesn’t smoke AT ALL). I also use Liqui Moly valve cleaner and Injector cleaner, both of which are awesome!.

As per the spoiler issue, at some point in time my car was acting quite erratic (i.e. spoiler error lights, etc.), and I solved this (and many other) problems by Removing and Replacing ALL the fuses, making sure that each one is matching the right specs that you can find on the small booklet in your fuse box.

As you already own the Durametric tool, my last suggestion Is for you to buy the book "101 Projects for Your Porsche 911, 996 and 997 1998-2008 (Motorbooks Workshop)" by Wayne Dempsey.

I believe it's one of the best ways to learn about your car in a fast, efficient and methodical way (by sections) -  and it's also packed with great color pictures.

Cheers.

Do at least two things:

1.    Become a contributing member.  This site it first class.  No rubbish.  Just facts and help.

2.   Buy the book mentioned by JuncoJones.above.

You have some mindset problem I think.

First;

Without getting any information or support; why should I be a contributing member?

Forum's are on the internet to share knowledge and information and help each member of course for FREE.

Otherwise it is stupid. Then you can go to a dealer and pay money to them to ask something...

If it is just about MONEY in your mind; you have to do sign up with PAYMENT like MHHAUTO forums

Then without getting money; you will not let anyone to be a member.

I don't want to such expensive books just some small info requests.

If no one writes any answer (although a kind person not like you; answered already...) there are several forums on internet.

Actually; you seem very funny person; we need these kinds of persons on Earth ahaa

JuncoJones;

thank you very much for your support without interrogating me like the others.

In my country; Liqui Moly oils are not selling by the distributors. Only additives.

And yes; as you mentioned above; I will continue with my previous Motul X-Cess 5W-40; I was happy with that oil not like the Mobil1

I already bought that book; I couldn't read all of the book yet;

But I think it includes more mechanical explanations than Durametric things etc.

I will try to change all the fuses as your suggestion.

Thank you again. Good luck...

You are welcome, skuyumcu.  A few more comments:

  1. When you have a chance, have all the fluids replaced, including brake, transmission and engine coolant.  Of course, you don’t have to do this as often as an oil change, but will help keeping your car in great shape along the way.
  2. It is good practice to keep a detailed log including dates, brands and mileage.
  3. Before clearing fault codes with your Durametric, save a dated copy in PDF format, THEN clear the codes
  4. It’s much simpler so understand live data in a graphical mode (2 dimensions). This will show changes throughout time, and it is much easier for anyone to help you with your engine analysis by looking at the variations over time.

Cheers

It costs a lot to run a site like this so without members' contribution, this site will fold. A lot of members got help and donated in joy after their problems are solved but of course that's up to the person. I'm sure Hilux's comments are just friendly suggestions in good will. I don't think he benefits from any membership fee.

Now re some of your questions, the wiring diagram for the WHOLE car is here http://www.ganino.com/games/Porsche%...01999-2000.pdf

The spoiler circuits are in sheet 8. Access to the microswitches and spoiler diassembly are here http://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/723817-997-rear-spoiler-drive-assembly-rebuild.html

Your Durametric readings look good to me. The only thing that's marginal is camshaft position deviation of +6 degrees @crank. The spec is +/- 6 degrees so you are at the edge BUT if it's truly a positive 6 degrees as opposed to negative 6, I think you should be fine.

Hello Ahsai,

I see of course there should be a donations to keep these kind of sites...

But, it is weird to be written in my first post, then it's shape is changing to another way.

If, I was being using this site for a while, got lots if support and not give any donation, then yes, it is true.

But it should not be in the first posts...

Thank you so much for your support, I will look deeply to these posts...

Apologies, my posting was not meant to cause offence or ask for money.  Personally, I receive no financial benefit from this site.  However, it is one of the best  Porsche sites around and it costs a lot of cash to run it. I have been a contributing member for three years and  a Porsche owner for the same length of time. Early on I recognised that the advice given here is top quality and provided by experts.  I have certainly benfited from replies given to my questions and reading the advice given to others.

A Porsche is an expensive car to run and the advice you will get from this site will save you thousands of Euros and in comparison $25 a year donation is peanuts.

Look forward to reading more of your posts and happy Porsche ownership.
