I'd appreciate it if someone would comment on the following symptoms:

The car makes a loud "clanking" noise under acceleration or deceleration (engine braking). The frequency of the clanks is proportional to speed, not RPM.

When I put the car on jack stands with the transmission in neutral the left rear wheel spins freely. The right rear wheel, however binds up once per rotation and is hard to rotate. Occasionally this binding is associated with the clanking noise.

Is this a bad CV joint on the right side? If so, how do I tell if its the inboard or outboard CV joint? If not, what else could it be? Something wrong with the differential?

My PET lists the inboard CV joint separately 911 332 030 01 but doesn't show or list a part number for the outboard CV joint. Do you have to replace the whole drive shaft to replace the outboard joint?

How tough a job is it to replace the drive shaft or CV joint?
