I have had an ABS fault and seems to have gone but now I have selected low range in 4WD and cannot disengage it.

It says 4WD fault and the single red light stays on.

Can anyone shed some light on my issue?

Don't believe so.  They're motor controlled.  Have you tried backing up a few feet and trying to disengage it again?  Gears could be bound up.

Thanks for your reply.

I have tried reversing and re engaging to full 4WD but the red light in the centre of the 4WD selector stays on and the car runs as if in low gear. max 60 km /hr @ 3,500rpm

Also tried disconnecting the battery for 2hrs.

I now have a PSM issue. The orange warning light is on.

The only change recently is an aftermarket stereo which eliminated some dash info.

The diff is locked.

Could the ABS cause the fault and restrict the selector?

Or could the PSM restrict it?

I don't believe either of those would be an input to the module that controls the differential.  I think the PSM light will probably clear when you can drive it normally.  I'd get the faults read/reset see what the ECU is telling you.

Without codes we are guessing, but it sounds like your transfer case servo motor is not working.

 

Check the fuse for it, if ok then it most probably will be a servo motor replacement.

 

If the servo requires replacement, it may also need a controller replacement to match the new version motor. This was common for the early model Cayennes.

 

If it is a faulty servo motor, it will be putting the transfer case in the wrong gear position. This will result in excessive loads on the drivetrain.

 

Servo is about $1000 AUD and the controller is another $950 AUD. Labour will be $1000 if done at the dealer.

 

With this type of fault it is a good idea to not drive it until you fix the issue, otherwise your repair bill will be significantly higher if you damage the transfer box.

 

Get it fixed.
