Good afternoon all,

 

Following a spirited drive on Friday evening, I peeled off the A64 & took the 270 degree slip road at about 45 in second.  My 987S made an odd noise, gave me just enough time to recall the Fast7 scene where Dom can hear something wrong with the R8, & then it died.  The dash lit up like a Christmas tree, power steering failed & a plume of white oily smelling smoke filled my mirrors, & I've spent a couple of days feeling sorry for myself & diagnosing the demise of my P&J via Google.

 

I've heard bits & pieces about IMS this & RMS that, but I'm fearing the worst as to if the engine has gone & subsequently whether I'm ever going to actually play with my favourite toy again. 

 

When I put the key back in ignition to put the roof back up, the dash complained of a loss of coolant, but there were only a few spots of oil on the ground after the low loader took it to SCoM, & now I can actually see the part of the driveway that my toy usually occupies, I see that there's a few spots there too. 

 

I've seen glimmers of hope in that IMS failure apparently usually generates your own personal oil slick, & that it might only be the AOS that has failed?  I also wondered if taking a pronounced bend at speed would cause oil surge, or whether Google is flattering my driving prowess in suggesting I'd be capable of generating sufficient G force to cause such a thing?

 

In the UK, Porsche are now supplying short engines for the M96 & M97 on an exchange basis at a heavily subsidised rate.  Prices of around £2500-3000 (~$4000-£5000) have been quoted, so it might be worth checking if Porsche USA are doing the same.  If the heads are OK, it might be an affordable way out.

 

This was another glimmer of hope in the event that the engine is toast, but Google as I might, I can't find anything from Porsche themselves on engine exchanges & less still for the sorts of numbers mentioned.

 

Do any RT regulars know more about this that could point me in the right direction for when the dealerships open again?  How do I tag Richard Hamilton in a post?

 

Also, re donating, what's a TSB?

I doubt an AOS failure would cause the car to cut out, but a plume of white oily smoke is common when they fail.  They sometimes make a screeching noise when the internal pipe fails - like blowing air through a reed.  First thing I would do is to take off the oil filter, and check it for metal debris.  If it is full of metal slivers, then I suspect the engine is toast.

I have no doubt Specialist Cars have a good reputation, but I would have a word with Russ at Revolution Porsche on Brighouse, as he has some experience of the short exchange engines.

I was just looking back over the history file this morning & it looks like the RMS was replaced a few years ago, but not the IMS.  Speaking to SCoM this morning they say that a couple of spark plugs are crushed & expect valve damage too, meaning that a short engine exchange might not cut it.

 

**** shame.  :(
