When I bought the 02 C4S in April of last year, I saw that the button for the porsche sports exhaust wouldn't do anything. The exhaust was always loud...

Well...when I took the rear bumper off it was clear to me as to why it didn't work. The passenger side valves vacuum line was unplugged. I also noticed the seems of the mufflers splitting and the passenger side muffler had a huge patch job done. Looks like they gutted the muffler on that side.

I am wondering if the previous owner unplugged it because the system was giving him a hard time with an exhaust that was falling apart. Or he just wanted the loud noises on 24/7. I would think this is a pretty simple system...

Any diagrams or threads on this system I can read up on? I would like to have this feature on the car when I'm back up and running. Being able to stay quiet when I'm in the neighborhood would give me some huge bonus points with the wife :)

The PSE defaults to always open so if the valves are damaged there is likely no way to quiet the exhaust.

I suggest you find a good Porsche shop that is familiar with PSE and have them inspect it.

Yikes...I could just imagine the bill for that. I'll attempt to trouble shoot myself 1st. Thx Loren.

Not as bad as you might think. My "quiet mode" switch stopped working recently ... and even though I installed it myself and so understood how it functioned, I could not trace this problem down.. I took it to a nearby Indy shop. Final damage was one hour labor and $50 for a new vacuum valve. I had actually checked the valve by listening to and feeling it "thunk" when the switch was activated ... but it had failed internally and was leaking vacuum.

It is actually very easy to access and expect. Check vacuum lines and the vacuum valve. All can be done in less than 1 hour.
