A couple of times recently, my '07 997 TT has been really rattle-y when I first started it.  First time this lasted for about a second, today for about 3 seconds.  After that, it dropped back to normal, and the car ran fine.  It sounded like a loose chain maybe, so I wondered if perhaps there was a sticky tensioner?  Any ideas?

The turbo cars all tend to be slightly noisy at cold start up, nothing unusual.

+1, the Turbo's do have a "rattle" at idle like that -- sounds like a loose chain with poor tension or so as you said.  On my car you could even see in the records that the first service appointment the original buyer made at the dealer was to investigate a "rattle" from the engine, exactly like we are stating.  You can see in the notes that the tech says this is perfectly normal and nothing to be alarmed about.

Thanks Guys.  Sorry, I should probably have said .... this is my third TT (996TT, 996 TurboS, 997.1), and this was the first time I've noticed something quite as loud.  Now, it might just be the normal thing of I happened to hear it once, and now I'm listening for it, but it's not something I heard before in 6 years or so.  I would be more concerned, but as I said, it only last a couple of seconds, then all seems fine.  Anyone heard of anything like this being a problem, or just one of those things?

Just about everyone we see in the shop makes some noise, particularly on a cold start up.  You always could have an additional issue, but these things just make some noise. If you are concerned it is something in excess of normal, have your shop look into it, if for no other reason than to put your mind at rest.

I HAVE A 2008 997 TT. DOES THE SAME . MAKES NOISE ON START UP WHEN COLD BUT NOT ALL THE TIME . WATCH THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE WHILE STARTING AND AS SOON AS OIL PRESSURE BUILDS THE NOISE STOPS . I HAVE LOOKED INTO THIS ISSUE IN DETAIL AND IT IS NORMAL. NOT A NICE SOUND FOR AN EXPENSIVE CAR TO MAKE .

Please do not type in ALL CAPs - on the Internet that means shouting.

And I sure you don't mean to shout.
