Just purchased 1978 991 SC Targa.  VIN # 9118211984 which shows as a California Targa.  However, we think the engine is a later 3.2 ltr.  Just not sure what year. Engine # is 64003831 - think it is a 1984.  Can anybody help?

Unless someone built it up to 3.2 it was not originally.

Serial number 64003831 was factory built as a 3.0 liter engine in 1980.

The engine type stamped on the block says 930/21. Research shows engine type for the 1980 911 with that number as 930/07.  So, what does that mean?

If the first 3 numbers of the serial number are "640" and it is a US car then the engine was built in 1980.

"640" is a US 1980 SC engine. "640" prefix was only used in 1980.

"64E", "64F", or "64G" would be 930.21 engines - made in 1984, 85, and 86 respectively.

Many times rebuilt engines of that vintage get put back together with an assortment of parts.

I doubt you can garner anything from the serial number or engine code because of that.

Needless to say if it has a 1980 (or later) engine it is not the original engine for that car.

We are pretty sure it is a 1984 3.2 because of the Fuel injection system.  Evidently the fan housing came from 1980 3,0.  The only question we haven't answered yet, what kind of alternator is it using.  Probably have to dismantle it.  The charging rate is 20V at 4000 rpm.  It is either the alternator or the old voltage regulator that is still in the car tht is causing that.

Is that the engine number on the engine case?

If so, then it is likely a rebuilt from another (earlier) case - nothing wrong with that but without further images or even some internal examination it could have rebuilt as almost anything (from 1970 -1980's vintage).
