Going under the knife

Car will be put away for the winter soon, and while it is being stored, I will be pulling the motor, disassemble, and send the cases to LNE for some Nickie's.

Looking at my car parked in the garage last night got me thinking. I have a double 20x20 garage. Not big at all and where the car sits, the stairs to the house door are maybe 3ft away from the rear bumper of the car.

Everything I read says to take the motor out from the bottom, with the transmission. My questions is will I have enough room to pull the motor and trans out. I can remove the stairs, temporary, and that will give me another 2-3ft of space.

AWD Guy...  When I undertook dropping the engine I purchased a MaxJax lift.  You can find new ones for under $2,000.  It's a 2 post lift and works under an 8' ceiling.  Much safer than floor jacks and jack stands.  It's a good investment if you're going to do your own work and maintenance.  I've had my car up and down so many times I can't even count, there's not much you can do from the top of the car so it's a valuable piece of equipment in your my tool box.

If you use jack stands, please make absolutely sure they are safe even if something rocks the car (even a small earthquake on California). I made rock solid jack stands the cheap way, see my posting here http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/46241-create-rock-solid-jack-stands-for-your-porsche/

 

Also, my garage is less than 19' long and I've managed to pull my 996 engine + transmission twice. However I fabricated two trolleys from 2x4 and strong castors and I could steer the whole package out in two axis.

I'll be using jack stands for sure. Not my 1st time doing this. Done a few engine/trans pulls, and safety is always my 1st priority.
