So...on our 2008 Cayenne, 103k miles, we had to do the rear main driveshaft. Porsche Dealer charged us about $1500 for it. Does that sound about right? The part alone was $1100. We have the V6 model, which they said the part costs more for it than the V8 models.

I would have liked to do this myself, but when they started talking about pulling the whole exhaust to get to it....I didn't want to anymore!

Anyone else have these driveshaft issues?

Just replaced it today and took 1 1/2 hours. Didn't have to loosen or touch the exhaust. Started from the flex disk and made my way back to the rear.

Tested and running like new again.

I replaced my center bearing with the Vertex solution. About 90 mins to do, including repacking the bearing and my guibo and shaft looked new. I am very impressed with the engineering. This was at 67k miles on my '08 CTT. Nearly 3k later and I have no complaints at all. The CTTs seem to fail earlier because of the increased loads on the drivetrain.

Cheers,
TomF

That sadly is the about the going dealer rate. On a part that was poorly engineered you think Porsche could try to give you somewhat of a deal or discount. You did well at 103K though, seems like most go around 40~70K.  Yea, you could do it yourself and like was mentioned, you don't have to drop the exhaust, at least on the V8, not sure about the VR6?

V6 don't have to touch the exhaust. I just replaced mine. 80k miles is all mine could handle. I was really surprised that the previous owner had the mount replaced with one similar to vertex and it still gave out.

i just had mine done at North Scottsdale, They get the OEM part from another supplier for $775 (clamping sleeves were replaced and 6 new screws) so total parts were 887 - 10% or $798. Labor was 319 with a 10% discount or $287.   Total price was $1,085 so not is all bad in their world as they recognize this is a frustrating issue for CTT owners. Mine was at 41K but the original owner took delivery in 2003 so this truck is 11 years old now.  Guess i could have saved the labor and done this myself but having the 1 year warranty on the new shaft i guess is worth it to me. I would go back to the dealer and tell them what others are charging . $1,500 seems excessive
