TIPTRONIC FLUID CHANGE

I have a 2004 Cayenne S with 214,000 miles that has always had meticulous maintenance but yesterday a "Master Mechanic" advised me not to service the transmission if it is functioning normally, which it is.

Should I continue to follow the recommended maintenance.

His rational was the same old line, if it is not broke............

I am not a Master mechanic, but I advise to change the transmission fluid and filter now.

It should be changed at 60,000 mile intervals to maximise the life of the system.

I would agree to normally change it twice (half the interval) what Porsche recommends but call a few of the big Transmission shops and you will usually find if it is a high mileage transmission that has never been changed just top off if needed but don't change. One of the thoughts is that it is coming to an end of it's useful life and the benefits of a change are outweighed by the drawbacks. The thought is that at high mileage a change can loosen varnish and such that may flow around and clog some of the small ports in the valve body & tranny before they can get caught by the filter.

I suppose their could be some logic in not changing the fluid if it is high mileage due to varnish etc.

I personally would not subscribe to that wisdom though.

I think I need to clarify my post, the transmission has seen all required maintenance during it's 214,000 mile lifetime. This was a question for now and future maint.

If that's the case then it would've had the transmission fluid changed at 160,000 miles if done as per the recommended maintenance schedule.

It's next scheduled change is due at 320,000 miles.

I would be changing both fluid and filter at 220,000 miles.

I am curious to know what type/spec of transmission fluid has been used in the transmission.

Was it the OEM type fluid used at the dealership or have you been using an alternate brand?

Our normal service intervals for the Tiptronic are 40-60K, regardless of total mileage.

The Cayenne has always been serviced at the dealer using only approved fluids. Now, due to the mileage, I plan to due more frequent services.

Changing the fluid more frequently, as you are planning, will only prolong the transmission service life.

Reassuring to know that the approved fluids are doing their job.
