What's that cover for?

Hi guys,

 

I just recently changed the lock on my car door as the actuator was broken.

 

There's a retaining cover (white plastic piece) that I forgot to put back. It's a pain in the *** to do it all over. I just wanted to ask what it's for?

If it's a fairly unimportant piece of cover, I think I'm going to skip it and lazy on it... otherwise... off with the door tomorrow!

If I'm looking at this correctly, I think this is part of the lock mechanism that helps prevent theft by slim-jimming.

 

If you don't think the car will be stolen, then the part looks fairly unimportant.
