I drive a 2004 CTT and upon start up I will get this horrifying grinding noise. My father tells me it's the starter going, and the bendix is extending for too long.

I find out that 5w-30 was put in the Cayenne before my ownership, and too my understand that is just no good, so I fill it up with 0w-40 Mobil and the grinding noise is happening far less. Almost never now, how could that be? Was the oil not lubricating a part of the motor before startup and that was the grinding noise. Thanks.

I would say this is 99% your starter. This kind of noise is very specific. I guess you know where the starter is located. Under the intake manifold.

If you are there already to check the starter i would replace it anyway. Check your cooling tubes in the same time

Okay, that's what I figured, since that's what 99% of people say when they hear a grind. I just don't like scaring small children and passing dogs when I start my her up! Very annoying
