I have a shot at buying an older style PSE for cheap for my 2003 C2...

Can anyone say how much different the old versus new versions of the PSE sounds?

It looks like the new one has a bigger bypass pipe, but that bigger one goes through the muffler whereas the old style's smaller pipe completely bypasses the mufflers...

So I am thinking the net effect may sound about the same in terms of volume and sound.

Thanks,

PRH

I think the larger diameter bypass exhaust was designed for the 3.6 and it's improved VarioCam Plus and new cylinder heads. You can use the newer (larger bypass) on the older (3.4 liter) cars but not the smaller ones on the 3.6 liter cars. It was in a warning in the parts list. There is also a warning in the install TSB to never mix the old and new style - so the back pressure must be quite different.

Loren, you are amazing!

So, I might still buy these and resell them since they are brand new and the guy doesn't want to bother selling them himself.

Can you confirm if this PSE with the "996.111.984/5.00" part number is for all 3.4 996s, or just certain years so I advertize them correctly?

Thanks,

PRH

Those part numbers are just the mufflers. They will fit any 3.4 liter Carrera and default to always open (loud). I have those on my car with no electronics and vacuum stuff. I do not think they are too loud - just the way Porsche's are supposed to sound. ;)

Full part numbers should be:

996 111 984 00 Main muffler, left with flap

996 111 985 00 Main muffler, right with flap

Gee, someone needs to let dealers like Brandywine know about this. I just noticed that they were selling 10 of the smaller bypass exhausts on eBay and advertizing them for "all 996 from 1999 to current."

000 044 200 21 is the newer larger PSE. So unless they mixed up their stock it should be the large bypass type - that will work on all model year Carrera's.

... looks like they used the picture of an old one though...

Is there any difference in sound or performance to install the old PSE vs the new PSE on a 2001 C4 ?

Are the wider pipes louder ? or a different tone perhaps ?

I would be very interested in these.

Thanks

IMHO... no, not much. The older small style maybe a little raspier vs. the new one that may be a little deeper. I have only heard the old style on a 3.4 and most of the newer style are on 3.6 liter cars. Either way they are pretty close.
