Loud high pitched noise and vibration from passenger front of my 40th AE.

No noise until car warms up and then with A/C on I can feel it kick into high at which point the noise and vibrations starts and it will stop a little after when fans cut out.
Car not overheating and temp stars right at 180 - 185 which is where it has always been.

Seems pretty indicative the problem is a fan and I assume this is the radiator fan (bearing??) telling me about to give up the ghost? Can anyone chime in and help me concur.

Anything bad if I just let it go for a bit I had a planned oil change later in the month and rather just knock out both . Also, what is cheapest place to get replacement? What is involved cost wise. Finally, is replacement the only option? Should I worry about drivers side going soon too?

If you have Durametric, you can activate the radiator fans to check. If not, you can knee down and listen close to the right front wheel fender area for the noise. If it's really the radiator fan, a replacement is not too bad. i think a BOSCH fan is about $250. Need to remove the wheel liner, and maybe even the front bumper.

I don't see why you need to replace the driver side at the same time. Can wait till that side fails. As long as the fan is still turning, you should be fine. The noise may indicate the fan has more resistance so it may draw more current. If you are handy, you probably can get away with replacing the greasing the bearing but I've never seen a DIY for that online.

I had the exact same problem in the same place on mine. It kept getting worse. I would think it would be just like mine - a bad loose bearing that grease will not fix. The bearing was toast with tons of play. Loren has a very good DIY on it - you don't need to remove the bumper - you just remove wheel liner. I just did this for my 2001 C4 Cab. And I agree with Ahsai - no reason to fix driver side yet - just wait and see since its not that critical. Might want to buy some replacement plastic connectors for the wheel liner when you order the new fan, because they often break when you remove them or at least get pretty deformed. Not a hard fix at all.

I just started hearing a brief high-pitched squeal when my radiator fans first kick in. Is this a reasonable DIY? I haven't seen any clear instructions on any forum, just speculation of what might or might not need to be removed.

Anyone use the Bosch aftermarket fan instead of the OEM with success?

OEM = $400+ for a fan :eek:

Bosch = $200 or less
