Hello all,

As I was putting oil in my 2003 996 cab today I noticed a yellow residue in the fill tube. The residue was the consistency of grease. I am scheduled for yearly service trip next Friday and would really like to know what this residue could be prior to taking my car in for service. My engine and power train warranty will expire in June so I am really interested in finding out whether this residue is a sign of something bad. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Its condensation of moisture mixed with oil. Completely normal if you drive short trips and in cold and humid weather. A long drive (hrs) in dry weather should clear it right up.

This is a pic of my 996 2003 oil filler tube in the winter after short journeys on cold days. In summer or after long drives there is hardly any muck. I normally clean this out.

When I first saw this after buying the car I was horrified. I checked for leaks, changed the oil and whatever, but now know it's fairly normal for these engines.

Thank you both for your prompt replies. You have greatly relieved my mind. I was imagining all kinds of doomsday scenarios.
