So i was looking at these dimple magnetic drain plugs since im due for an oil change. Planning on using mobil 1 0w40 as i live in memphis TN, gets fairly hot in the summer but not too cold in the winter (except last winter). I also do a lot of short trips and feel like the 0w40 helps on the start up lubrication.

Anyway, i was thinking about adding a magnetic plug but these engines are mostly aluminum arent they? What engine parts are ferrous and wear? Im wondering if there are even enough ferrous parts in the engine to mess with the magnetic drain plug. It's only $30 so it's not a big deal either way....I know it cant hurt anything.

Great point about the aluminum block. I have been using it for a while and notice the fine dust that sticks to the magnet at each oil change.

Lots of ferrous parts...camshafts, cam followers, intake/exhaust valves, piston rings, IMS bearing, oil pump gears, timing chains, gear sprokets, variocam+, etc,...too many to list :)

+1. If you want to improve your chances of survival, consider adding a spin on oil filter as well, and perhaps adding a Filter Mag unit to the spin on.

You would be amazed at what this will pickup and remove from the oil.

Not at all unusual; there are a lot of ferrous components in these engine's, and they often generate a metallic grit so fine it can actually pass through many oil filters and continue to circulate. Magnets are your next line of defense to trap this grit.
