Hi there:

Here is the background:

Got this 986 (1999) and the top and windows were not working.

Windows solved temporarily by putting a littel cardboard piece in the microswitch at the roof latch. Not a perm fix, but at least they work for now and I know I need a microswitch.

As for the top:

E-Brake light on.

Top Light on.

Before investigating I would hear a click from the motor with no action from the clamshell or top.

Took off the clips and pulled the clamshell back. Top will still not move and only clicks from the motor. Pulled the cables from the motor on both sides and motor runs in both directions repeatedly. Cables are diamond braid. Pulled the red and white clips for the top. Transmissions on each side still dont work. Pulled the drivers side boomerang off and both sides start to work! Put boomerange back on and grease both sides where they touch the plastic disc behind it. Grease the clamshell tracks and the clips for the clamshell and top. Straighten the top and the clamshell and put clips back on. Top will go about half way down and then stop. Then if I hit the switch lets say 15 times it will then move a fraction of an inch for 5 pushes. Then 15 pushes of nothing. No motor click, nothing. Then 5 pushes it will move a fraction of an inch. etc. Sometimes it will then move smooth to almost reclined and then repeat this behavior for the last tucking and clamshell close. Other times its like this the whole way down. Samefor putting the top up. Clamshell attched or not it behaves the same way.

This would lead me to believe that the tranmission units are jamming. BUT, no motor click for 15 pushes, then motor works for 5 pushes, then repeat. Which I could say is maybe the top switch in the dash. BUT, cables unplugged from the motor, the motor goes both ways perfectly.

ALSO while in its last inches of closing or opening, up and down seem to reverse. As the top gets say an inch from being all the way down, it will start going back up for a second. If I let go of the button and hit it up a hair and then do it again it will generally go down a little and I have to kind of do this up/down switch pushing to coax it down. Same behavior in the last few inches of it going up. If I hold in the up button eventually it will just start going back down. The motors have no idea to stop they just continue along their way making a circle back.

Lastly, one clamshell strut and ball as they attach to the boomerang were a little tight and slightly corroded. I removed that side and still has the same behavior. When the top is all the way up or all the way down, I still get the top iight on the dash lit up.

Any advice would be fantastic!

Thanks
