I had a RMS leak (drops of oil) on my 2002 C4S about a month ago. The dealer

replaced both the RMS and the intermediate seals and supposedly performed the test with the seating tool.

The car is back at the dealer again with the same problem.

I wonder if they are going to try to fix it again or if it needs a new engine ?

If it needs a new engine would it be worhwhile upgrading to an X51 engine instead ?

It should cost less on labour since the engine has to come out anyway.

Isn't replacing the RMS just a "band aid" measure anyway ? Would it be fair to say that the issue is not the RMS itself but the engine case ?

You're probably right, a RMS should never fail, especially on a low miles car. I've had Chevys and Fords go nearly 100K miles and never had a RMS failure, you can't tell me they are better engineered than a Porsche...then again the CEL has never gone off on my Ford Expedition either.

I just got the car back..Apparently they replaced the intermediate shaft seal - the RMS was OK..

Keep in mind both seals were replaced one month ago..

This time around they did not want to give me a printed service sheet detailing the description of the work and the parts replaced..
