Hello everyone,

Glad to be part of the community.

Recently purchased a 2001 996 - 68K on the clock. Love the car!

So far I replaced the battery. The alternator bracket snapped so I had to replace that (aka water bracket) along with the serpentine belt and and ofcourse the oil filler neck. Changed the oil as well.

One issue I can't seem to figure out and I am leading to believe it is the hazzard switch but wanted to be sure before I start digging

around is that the blinkers seem to work and not work. Some times I flip the blinker on and it works some times it doesnt (this is for both turn signals).

Sometimes the issue goes away for almost a week and then comes back. This has been happening since day 3 of me driving her. What could this be?

Thanks in advance!

When ever the blinkers stop working the Hazard switch doesn't work either. The only part of the hazard switch that seems to be functional when this occurs is the red triangle being illuminated when the head lights are on.

Just did some research on the relay seems a fairly easy and cheap part to source. http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/971-blinker-doesnt/?hl=%2Bblinker+%2Brelay#entry4285

Will try that first.

Did you change any light bulbs on you headlights?

No I did not. Just waiting on the relay to be shipped. Why do you ask?

I had removed my headlights to replace the headlight washer nozzles and when I didn't seat the driver side light correctly I was having erratic blinker function on that side when the high-beam was on for example - it was resolved by me firmly pushing the headlight into it's slot.

Some people have replace the indicator bulbs with LED versions that caused all sorts of problems because they have the wrong internal resistance.

narkose - The headlights have not been removed. - but I may check that out when the relay gets here seems fairly easy to remove it http://www.c-speedr.com/howto/996headlight/996headlight.php

JFP in PA - All bulbs seem to be stock.

I am fairly confident that this is not a bulb related issue since the whole system stops working when this occurs. Neither of the directional turn on (left nor right), and the hazard switch does nothing when engaged (just the triangle on the button glows). This has to be something with in the circuit itself that cuts functionality to the flasher system and concludes me to believe it is flasher relay/hazard button related. That and I have done some searching on this topic and it seems others have been successful with either replacing the button or the relay.

P.S. Had to fix another problem the other day and a major one at that or so I thought - the key got stock in the ignition and wouldnt pull out, I was able to pry it out and then the car wouldnt shut off :-/. I was thinkinng all sorts of things until I found the following: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Porsche-996-997-Carrera/86-ELEC-Replacing_Your_Ignition_Switch_Steering_Lock/86-ELEC-Replacing_Your_Ignition_Switch_Steering_Lock.htm

Thankfully a buddy of mine works at the local Audi dealership and was able to source me the electrical part of the ignition switch that was ordered by a customer for an A6 but never picked up. Charged me only 10 bucks too! Replacing the switch was fairly easy and what a relief i had after everything was back together. Never experienced something like this in any of my other cars. But it was interesting I will tell you that. Just thought I would share.
