I've got an annoying clacking noise coming from my engine at idle on my 2008 Carrera 2S, 6spd. The noise seems to go away when the motor is rev'd. The car has 86K miles on it, but still runs very strong and uses no oil. Just had serpentine belt and idler arms/tensioner replaced, but noise still there. I've seen on other blogs where this is "normal." Any ideas on what this could be? Thanks in advance for inputs.

Could be anything. Check out Steelman Engine Ear. You can find any noise or rattle with this thing. A must tool for the DIYer.

Can you identify if this clacking noise is coming from cylinder bank 2 (= right side of vehicle) ?

Lucy - Problem has been solved. I had a serpentine belt replaced about a month ago. When the belt came off, I had the car towed to the nearest imported auto repair (not my usual). They replaced the belt, idler arms and tensioner. In the process they didn't tighten the power steering pump back to the mount properly. This caused the unit to wobble which eventually (and in short order) caused the pully to make the clacking noise. Brought my baby to my normal mechanic who discovered the cause of the noise. Pully replaced. Power steering pump properly tightened. Problem solved. Cost: $300 P&L. Lesson learned: Take the car to your usual mechanic EVERY time regardless of the towing cost.

Good to read that it was relatively harmeless. I already expected something worse (e.g. bore/piston scoring) which can result in similar noises at idle as you described .... before the engine dies completely.

Enjoy and have fun with the car.

.... Yeah, mine sounded very similar to that. ....

I am imperessed how similar that clacking was, but with one main difference: In your case it was intermittent compared to the engine RPM. That would have given already enough proof that it wasn't piston related.

Your car still looks very clean, even the engine bay. Congrats.

PS: I like burgers too, mainly the Bitburgers
